Flickr has lost some of its cachet as other photo services and social networks have risen in the intervening years to challenge it. But the Yahoo-owned company has just made a number of significant improvements that should make Flickr very attractive to people looking for an online home for their photos.

Among the big ticket improvements: you can now receive 1TB of free online storage for photos and videos and have access to high-resolution downloads in the event you lose those images on your PC.

That alone makes Flickr very attractive — most cloud services offer a range of between 1GB and 15GB worth of free storage before slapping you with monthly fees. Sites like Shutterfly or Snapfish offer unlimited storage, but require you to make annual purchases to keep your account in good standing.

Flickr does put some limits on what your free account can do: videos are limited to 1GB in size each, photos can be no larger than 200MB each and video playback is capped at three minutes.

How are they giving away so much free space? Flickr says you’ll see ads on your photo pages and throughout your browsing experience. Seems like a modest price to pay, but if you want an ad-free experience you can pay $49.99 a year to remove those ads. You also have the option to boost your storage to 2TB for $499.99 a year (also with no ads).

Flickr has also undergone a substantial redesign. You can now view images in full-screen and the layout has been changed to reduce the amount of white space that had plagued the original interface.

So is the new-and-improved Flickr a great space to store your images? I’d say, provisionally, yes. The 1TB of free space alone is enough to tempt those looking for a decent cloud back-up solution and the new layout provides a great way to view and organize your online images. What you won’t get is the seamless folder-syncing that other cloud services, like Box or SugarSync, offer. If you’re uploading photos from your desktop, you’ll have to do it manually (unless you use an Eye-Fi card, which can automatically upload your images to Flickr. You can also get a seamless upload experience if you shot photos using Flickr’s mobile app on your smartphone).

You can watch Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer give a walk-through of the new Flickr below.

Today, our photos are increasingly scattered between hard drives, camera memory cards, phones, social networks and the cloud. A new software program from Nero, dubbed NeroKwik promises to help — at least with your photos stored on social networks.

NeroKwik is an app for your iPhone or Android phone that connects to both Facebook and Google+ and displays any photos you have stored there in a central “tapestry.” After your photos are aggregated into NeroKwik, you can share them back out again privately via email or on Facebook and Google +.

Nero doesn’t host your photos, it simply lets you group images from two different social networks into a single view, along with some tools to share them out again and add annotations. Also, any images that are “liked” more by your friends and family appear larger on the screen, in the event you’re desperate for validation.

You can also access any photos you’ve stored on the cloud storage service SugarSync.

NeroKwik is available in a free version that supports access to your images on two devices. A paid version, coming soon for an unspecified price, will support an unlimted number of devices plus PC viewing. The premium version will also let you view and share videos stored on Facebook and Google+. Free versions for BlackBerry and Windows Phone are promised soon.

NeroKwik is certainly a step in the right direction, but as of now it’s fairly limited. While Facebook is huge and Google+ is growing, the only other service available is SugarSync. No Box, Dropbox, iCloud or Shutterly — you get the idea. Nor are photos stored on your personal hard drives accounted for.

A natural (and needed) next step is for a program that can knit all of your online/offline images together across multiple accounts. Until then, NeroKwik costs you nothing to try, so why not kick the tires and see how it works for you?

A new report in Mother Jones suggests that the popular photo site Shutterfly has some serious security holes. It’s worth reading the whole piece for a sense of the issue, but here’s a snippet:

This spring, with millions of kids across the United States participating in sports leagues and other activities, coaches and harried parents are turning to social sharing websites to keep everything running smoothly. The most popular option is Shutterfly, which boasted around 5 million visitors per month as of March 2012. Shutterfly’s free “Team” service allows users (which includes anyone over 13) to upload photos of kids, home addresses, emails, gender information, phone numbers, school names, jersey numbers, and game schedules—all in one place. The American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) has a partnership with Shutterfly, and coaches actively encourage parents and coaches from over 50,000 soccer teams to utilize the service.

But there’s a catch: Even though Shutterfly’s privacy policy claims that the whole site is protected with SSL—a strong form of internet security used to prevent websites from being hacked into—it isn’t actually using the encryption for much of the website, including the team pages that contain detailed information on the kids. While plenty of sites across the web don’t use this extra security, it’s more worrisome for a large social sharing site not to do so, especially one that features kids’ sensitive data. (Facebook, Twitter, and Google all use SSL, as do banks and many sites that conduct credit card transactions.)

Emails from representatives for Shutterfly, obtained by Mother Jones, show that the photo-sharing company has been aware of the problem for at least six months but hasn’t taken action to fix it, nor has it asked users to remove their kids’ information from the site. That means that sensitive information about children can be easily obtained by anyone with basic tech skills, a quick download of a program called Cookie Cadger, and a computer with the right equipment.

Later in the report, Shutterfly says they have begun taking steps to address the flaws, which is good to hear.

It’s also worth noting that the security problems pointed out by Mother Jones haven’t actually been exploited — at least to anyone’s knowledge. They exist in theory not (yet) in practice.

Still, it’s a good reminder about the potential pitfalls of moving our digital lives online. We are putting our images and sensitive information into the hands of others and trusting that they have adequate security in place to protect our privacy.

Sometimes, it appears, they don’t.

ArcSoft’s Photo+ software helps you tame your photo collection: it’s a photo viewer that quickly and easily lets you see what photos are in a given folder by dragging and dropping a single image into the viewer (doing that will instantly make all the photos in that folder viewable).

Photo+ is now available for Macs in the Mac app store for an introductory price of $0.99 (usually $9.99).

Photos are automatically oriented correctly in the viewer (no neck-craning here) and can be viewed in full screen or as a slideshow which you can customized with transition effects or music. You’ll also be able to make some basic edits, such as cropping, to images in the viewer. Photo+ supports over 35 image formats, including RAW files and Gifs.

Of course, no software would be complete without an option to share. Photo+ is integrated with Facebook, Twitter and Flickr, so images can be shared from within the program directly to your social circles.

When you’re done, you can share your spoken photo on YouTube or to Facebook. If you share the photo via email, you’ll see a photo plus a Quicktime movie file that should play the audio automatically (you can view a gallery of SpeakingPhotos here for a sense of how it works).

You can use your own photos or choose from the company’s own gallery of images and artwork. If you’re not happy with either option, SizzlPix will go out and do some custom photography for you to get just the right image and make the print. (No pricing on this.)

Interestingly, you can earn some money off of your SizzlPix! image. Every month, the company examines the images it’s transformed into SizzlPix and selects a winning photo. If you grant them permission to offer that image in their gallery, you’ll earn a royalty on it anytime someone orders a copy.

We all know mom has a soft spot for her family photos. This Mother’s Day, we rounded up five of our favorite photo-themed gifts for mom:

1. A Photo Book: This is fast becoming a holiday favorite, and for good reason. Photo books are easy to make and create long-lasting photographic statements that mom can cherish for years. You can make a photobook online at sites like Shutterfly, Smilebooks and in just a few clicks (if you’re an iPhone shooter, check out Keepsy).

Our advice: first, go the site and determine the size of your book (i.e. the number of photos it will use) then jump back into your computer, assemble a folder with a carefully-selected assortment. Give it a name like “mom’s photo book.” Then, go back to your photo book website of choice and create your book. You don’t have to spend hours on the layout – these sites can do that for you – but we do suggest spending some time captioning the images and pages. It shows you care. Cost: $10 on up.

2. Wall Art: Depending on mom’s tastes, why not spruce up her mantle with a piece of photographic wall art? If she’s the traditional type, consider a framed canvas photo print. Available in sizes from 8 x 10 up to 40 x 60-inches, these framed photos give a home a museum look – only instead of stuffy Englishmen on horseback parading around on your canvas, it’s your own family photos. If mom has somewhat edgier tastes, you can deliver her prints on aluminum, glass or a mirror. Costs: $50 on up.

3. Photo stationary: If part of mom’s job is keeping the house organized, why not let her do it with a daily reminder of her cherished loved ones. Photo stationary is available in a lot of shapes and sizes – from notepads to longer shopping list-style pads – and usually contains a photo (color or black & white) on each and every page. It’s inexpensive too. Costs: $9 on up.

4. A photo recipe book: Does mom love to cook? Does she have a few go-to recipes that never fail to delight? If you’re clever about it, you can make mom her very own recipe book using your own photos and professional templates. Just assemble her recipe cards, snap some photos, and use a collection of templates to print out your very own recipe book. Cost: free.

5. Scan her prints: Chances are, mom is sitting on a pile of photo prints and albums. Why not bring those prints into the digital age by scanning them for her? If you don’t want to do the work yourself (and who can blame you) there are plenty of online services that will do it for you - ScanDigital, ScanMyPhotos and PeggyBank are a few we like. Local photo retailers can usually provide this service as well (which is a nice option since you won’t have to send any photos in the mail). You can search for local specialists using your zip code here. If you can’t get into the house to get the albums or prints, a gift certificate for a scanning service will do nicely. Cost: usually around $0.45 per print.

When we started Your Digital Life, we had a fairly simple goal. We knew that there were plenty of excellent outlets for learning about what camera to buy or how to take a better photo.

What was missing was a site focused on everything that happened after you pressed the shutter.

So Your Digital Life was born. What we realized during the site’s first incarnation (YDL 1.0, if you will) is that what readers needed wasn’t simply the day’s latest and greatest news or service, but also a more coherent story. And so we’ve collected our wisdom, such as it is, and distilled into an e-book: From Fleeting to Forever: Enjoying and Preserving Your Digital Photos and Videos.

It’s available now from Amazon (here) as well as the Kobo bookstore. At just $6.99, we think it’s a great bargain (it runs 139 pages on the iPad, though page length will vary by reading device and font-size).

Here’s what’s inside:

Introduction

Chapter One: Get Organized

Chapter Two: Prints and Photo Books

Chapter Three: Wall Art

Chapter Four: Your Photos On… Anything!

Chapter Five: Digital Sharing and Social Networking

Chapter Six: Your Videos

Chapter Seven: How to Protect Your Images

Conclusion: Your Digital Life

Each chapter offers both some general guidelines for each theme as well as specific product and service recommendations where appropriate. We view it as a resource that you can return to again and again when you’re in need of photographic inspiration.

With the e-book also comes YDL 2.0, a refreshed new website which we feel will better emphasize our unique content. We’ll be updating it regularly so please check back often!
